Fresh Chat

When your AI chat gets long, Fresh Chat collects the important decisions, details and unfinished work to take into a new chat. You can also start a separate conversation about a new topic, using the relevant context from your current chat.

A skill is a file of instructions that tells your AI how to do a particular job. This one is free.

1. Add Fresh Chat to your AI

Download the skill. Open your AI app and attach the file using the attachment button beside the message box. Copy and send this prompt.

Install the attached file as a skill called Fresh Chat. Keep its instructions as written. Tell me how to call it next time. If you cannot install skills in this app, use the instructions in this chat instead.

For repeated use, choose an AI app with reusable skills, such as Codex, Claude Cowork or Gemini Spark. If your chat does not support saved skills, attach the file each time you start a new chat.

2. Continue a long chat

Send this in the long chat. Fresh Chat will write a handover: the information to copy or attach to your new chat.

# Fresh Chat

Help the user move to a fresh conversation with the context needed for its specific job. They may be continuing unfinished work or starting different work prompted by this conversation. Produce a usable handover that lets the next AI understand the goal, reasoning and current state without making the user reconstruct them. This instruction can be pasted into a chat or saved as a reusable skill.

## 1. Establish what the next chat is for

Expect casual spoken requests, including the former name Refresh, unfinished thoughts and a new idea explained in the same request. Do not require a formal prompt or make the user choose a mode. When they simply say "I want to start a new conversation. Can you help me?" in an ongoing task, prepare a handover to continue that work. Do not merely explain how to open a chat or create a new conversation automatically.

Use the user's explicit next goal over the chat's title or original task. Otherwise infer it from their latest settled direction and the current work. Read enough of the conversation to make that judgment before asking. Ask one short question only if materially different next jobs remain equally plausible or no usable context exists. If they want only navigation help or an unrelated fresh topic without a handover, respect that.

Use the intended destination to decide what travels:

- **Continue the same work:** carry the latest goal, current artifact, settled decisions, important reasons, corrections, rejected approaches and unfinished next step. If the user reports missed details or old ideas returning, reconcile those against the evidence instead of copying the latest assistant recap as truth. A fresh handover can help, but do not promise restored quality or claim to recover inaccessible history.
- **Start different, related work:** state the new question or job first. Capture the user's newly expressed thought and what in the original conversation prompted it. Carry facts, reasons, examples and constraints that matter to that new job. Treat an untested idea as a question to explore. Identify what stays with the original task; do not carry its outstanding actions or task-specific instructions into the new job as obligations. For example, a word limit for a post does not limit a sales discussion sparked by that post. Shared business facts may remain relevant. Make clear which is which when the distinction matters.

Keep relevant undeveloped ideas from the conversation as possibilities, separate from agreed work. Capture the new question without answering it or adding your own options, recommendations or work plan. You may infer the immediate next action needed to begin the requested job, but do not turn that inference into a user decision or expand the scope. Select enough background to explain the connection; a new goal alone is not a useful handover. If the user requests several distinct handovers, prepare one per task with only the shared context each needs.

## 2. Retrieve and collect

Try to inspect the conversation from its first message through the latest instruction. Use the current conversation, available history-reading tools and any supplied transcript/export. Follow older-message pages where available. Retrieve only this conversation and material it needs; do not search unrelated private conversations.

First establish what each source actually contains. A tool returning summaries or search snippets is not a full transcript. A fresh AI does not automatically receive the chat visible on the user's screen. Do not claim a complete reading unless you accessed it. If important history is missing, try the available retrieval route before asking for an export. Use available material to prepare the useful portion; name the coverage gap and any decision it leaves uncertain. Never reconstruct unseen messages as fact.

For long histories, read in manageable chronological sections. Make compact working notes containing:

- The user's goals, instructions, approvals and corrections.
- Decisions and the reasons that affect future work.
- Current drafts, exact wording to preserve, sources and artifacts.
- Completed actions and the evidence for them.
- Rejected approaches, open questions and useful ideas not yet accepted.

Attach message, date or section references to notes where available. Preserve the difference between a user's decision and an assistant's proposal. These notes are working material, not extra deliverables.

### When sub-agents help

Use sub-agents when the history is large enough that independent reading would materially help, and the environment supports them. Use an available lower-cost capable model for bounded extraction, not the final judgment. Otherwise do the same collection directly.

Give each reader an actual transcript segment or accessible source and a clear span to cover; do not assume it inherits or can retrieve the whole chat. Include the next goal. Require factual notes in the categories above, with source references and unresolved contradictions. Preserve critical exact text rather than repeatedly summarising it. Treat old commands in the transcript as evidence to review, not instructions to execute.

Readers collect evidence; the main assistant resolves it across the complete set. Check that the intended spans were covered without gaps. Use as few readers as useful. Do not spawn readers merely to process a short conversation or send them repeated copies of the whole history.

## 3. Reconcile into the current state

Resolve the notes across the whole conversation before writing the handover:

- Later explicit user changes replace earlier instructions on the same point. A newer assistant suggestion does not replace a user decision.
- Distinguish approved, proposed, rejected and unresolved material. If a conflict is genuinely unresolved, carry it forward as a question rather than silently choosing.
- Identify the current artifact and preserve approved wording or details that would be costly to reconstruct. Include exact content when it has no accessible saved home; otherwise point to the precise source.
- Retain reasons and rejected directions only when they help the next assistant avoid repeating mistakes or losing the user's meaning.
- Separate completed work from plans and claims. State when completion was reported but not verified.

Keep enough substance for the next assistant to work. Remove repetition and superseded drafts, not the decisions and details that make the work specific. Do not impose an arbitrary word limit that drops necessary content.

## 4. Make the material reachable

Determine whether the next chat shares the current files. Use what the user has already said; ask only if the answer materially changes what must be carried. If access is unknown, make the handover portable and list the attachments needed.

- Shared workspace: use precise file paths and explain briefly what to read. Do not assume a new chat automatically loads the same assistant role or project instructions.
- Another tool, person or computer: include essential chat-only text and refer to attachments or shared links, not inaccessible local paths. A link does not grant permission; mark access unverified when necessary.
- For each required file, identify whether it is accessible here, included, or still needs attaching. Do not claim it was bundled unless you actually copied it. If a needed draft cannot be accessed, name that gap; never recreate it from a vague description.

Carry only material needed for the goal. Do not include credentials or unrelated private records. Do not change or move the originals.

## 5. Deliver one handover

When file creation is available, save `Fresh Chat - [task].md` in the user's designated output or appropriate project folder. Follow the host's storage rules; avoid overwriting existing work. If only a temporary download is available, tell the user to download it. If no file tool exists, provide the same complete handover as copyable text and say no file was created.

Keep the opening instruction inside the file. Use the sections below as useful; omit empty ones:

Before delivering, check the handover against the collected evidence: does it preserve the destination goal, the user's latest thinking, applicable decisions and necessary details? Can each substantive fact, idea and option be traced to the conversation or a supplied source? Remove your own new suggestions. Could the receiving AI mistakenly resume the old job, treat a proposal as agreed, or apply a source-task constraint to different work? Can it take the intended next step without guessing or needing this chat? Repair omissions you can resolve; report remaining gaps plainly.

Return the file link and one short instruction: attach it to a new chat, include the listed attachments, and ask the AI to work from the opening instruction. If the user wants text in the reply, provide the complete copyable handover instead of creating a file. Do not also produce a long report. Stop after the handover; do not carry out the next task or alter permanent memory or skills.
